Derived from the Census question:
'How many motor vehicles (not counting motorbikes) do the people who live here have available for their use?'
This data presents the number of motor vehicles that are mechanically operational and are available for private use by the usual residents of private dwellings. However, it should be noted these vehicles may not necessarily be licensed or have a current warrant of fitness.
The ability of the population to source services and employment is strongly influenced by access to transport, and the number of motor vehicles per household gives a measure of this access to private transport. Major factors that influence the share of motor vehicles per household include:
- Age Structure and Household Types, which influence the Household Size and the number of adults present;
- access to public transport; and
- Household Income, which can influence the amount of money available to purchase motor vehicles.
These tables show the number of individuals with access to each number of motor vehicles. Household data excludes people temporarily absent from their usual residence on census night.
