Te Puni Kōkiri
Overview of profiles

The Te Puni Kōkiri Profiles are two sets of comprehensive socio-demographic profiles, covering:

  • iwi (comprehensive socio-demographic profile of 98 iwi populations); and
  • rohe (comprehensive socio-demographic profile of 6 rohe regions).

The definition of Māori for the purpose of this profile is based on Māori descent, not ethnicity. For further information on the Māori descent census question please see “specific topic notes”.

The data presented is for the census years 2013 and 2006.

A description of the socio-demographic variables profiled is included in “specific topic notes”.

For an iwi to be profiled in this site, the iwi must contain a minimum of 543 people in every census year. This avoids any complications caused by confidentiality rules imposed by Statistics NZ.

New Zealanders with Māori descent can identify with multiple iwi. Populations are therefore ‘multiple counted’ across the Iwi Profiles, and adding the total populations from the Iwi Profiles may significantly outnumber the total Māori population.

The Rohe profiled are:

  • Ikaroa-Rāwhiti
  • Tāmaki Makaurau
  • Waikato-Waiariki
  • Te Tai Hauāuru
  • Te Taitokerau
  • Te Waipounamu

These 6 rohe cover New Zealand and are based on Te Puni Kōkiri’s administrative regions.

Rohe profiles are aggregated census data from Area Unit and Meshblock geographic levels. The Rohe Profile tables are aggregations of whole 2013 Census meshblock geography. While the meshblocks used to collect Census data in 2001 differed a little from this, Statistics NZ have concorded the older datasets to the most current meshblock boundaries.
